AUGUST 3, 2008 – GODDARD STATE PARK
The Bower Bus pulled into the Hampton Inn in Warwick in the late afternoon on Friday, August 1st. with 28 passengers aboard, including former Reds Bob Robertson, Ray Ross, Aldo Guidolin, Johnny Bower and Ed MacQueen. Jerry Toppazzini also arrived for the weekend, his first reunion. The Friday night Meet and Greet got things started with a buffet from Chelo’s and liquid refreshments. The stories and back slapping quickly started.
On Saturday, some folks headed to Foxwoods Casino, and others to the Newport mansions. Board member, Dick Bartlett, provided some of the transportation in his famous Roostermobile.
Late in the afternoon, the Bus departed for a VIP party at the elegant home of Bill and Nancy Gilbane, located on the Barrington River. Bill was a Brown hockey player and is a staunch supporter of the Society. 125 Society guests and sponsors were in attendance. Deliciously catered New England fare was served. Music was provided by Ray Reniere and his Barleyhoppers. Hockey stories prevailed, as did some rather innovative dance steps.
A record crowd of 335 filled the Carousel at Goddard Park on Sunday. Players made their way to the stage to “Roll out the Barrel”, with Fernie Flaman remarking that it was “Just like Sunday nights at the Auditorium”. There was another great buffet cookout from Morin Caterers. Plenty of Reds merchandise was worn and bought throughout the afternoon.
This year’s Tops Awards went to Reds defenseman Marty Gateman and Society board member and former Reds stick boy, Tom McDonough. Service Awards were presented to Bob Paquette, Jr., who has been instrumental in our use of Goddard Park for our reunions, as well as Rick Cappalli and Mike Pappas, former Reds employees. Bill O’Connor received the Directors’ Award. A great time was again had by all.
