SUNDAY, JULY 28, 2002 – GODDARD STATE PARK

Under beautiful skies at Goddard Park, Buster Clegg, whose vision launched the Society two years ago, declared “Looks like a great day”. The storytelling commenced early with 220 players, executives and fans in attendance.

The players and their families came from near and far. First timers from Canada included Aldo and Phyllis Guidolin, Bob and Rosemary Beckett, 5 members of George McAvoy’s family, Bob and Marge Robertson and Reds employee, Mike Pappas.

George Patrick Duffy’s fantasy game was broadcast from the Carousel balcony. All players in attendance were part of the action. Buzz Deschamps scored the winning goal in sudden death overtime. Buzz was interviewed after the game by color man Tom McDonough.

Mark Mazur, son of popular Ed “Spider” Mazur, was in attendance with his family. It was a touching moment when it was revealed that Aldo was Mark’s godfather. Both Aldo and Spider played for the Cleveland Barons when Mark was born. Mark and Aldo hadn’t seen each other in many years and neither knew that the other was attending the reunion.

Fernie Flaman and Ed Ellsworth, Reds business manager for 31 years, were this year’s Tops Award recipients.

In a survey taken, 73% of attendees said that they want a reunion every year.
