The Sweaters
The term “hockey sweater” originated from the game’s earliest days when hockey was predominantly played outside during winter and when the sweaters worn by players were warm, wool-knit coverings. Use of the word “sweater” to refer to a hockey jersey is still preferred by some as a nostalgic nod to the game’s history.
The Reds wore sweaters exclusively through the mid 1930’s. Prone to pulls, shrinkage and the occasional moth hole, they were virtually all replaced with synthetic textiles after World War II. Those moisture-wicking fabrics also led to more colorful and detailed designs and logos.
The Reds wore 18 different sweater/jersey designs over their 51 years. As a colorful reminder of that legacy, we’ve created a beautifully illustrated 18” x 24” poster of those legendary jersey designs as a gift for your tax-deductible donation of $50 or more. Thank you in advance for your kind support.
