Ronald John Greschner, Gresh to his teammates, was selected 32nd overall by the New York Rangers in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. A defensive talent beyond his years, he played briefly with the Reds in the early part of the 1974-75 season before being called up by the Rangers, his first of 16 campaigns in Manhattan.
He played in 982 career NHL games, all with the Rangers, scoring 179 goals and 431 assists for 610 points. He also compiled 1,226 penalty minutes, the most in Rangers franchise history.
Gresh’s best offensive season came in 1978 when he scored 24 goals and 48 assists for 72 points, sometimes being deployed by coach Crag Patrick at left wing.
In the 2009 book 100 Ranger Greats, the authors ranked Greschner at No. 12 all-time of the 901 Rangers who had played during the team’s first 82 seasons
Overall, he played just shy of 1000 regular NHL games plus 84 more in the playoffs.
He was enshrined in the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023.
